Refugee Week Art Competition 2024:
“Finding Freedom: Family”
Advocates for Dignity and Hume City Council, in collaboration with the Refugee Week Working Group, proudly hosted the Refugee Week Art Competition on Friday, 2021 at Broadmeadows Town Hall, 10 Dimboola Rd, Broadmeadows. This inspiring event was part of the broader Refugee Week celebrations, aiming to amplify the voices and stories of refugees through art.
Theme: Finding Freedom – Family
The theme, “Finding Freedom: Family,” was aligned with the United Nations Refugee Week focus. It invited participants to explore and creatively express how refugees find strength, hope, and a sense of freedom within their families. Whether it’s the support of parents, the bond between siblings, or the strength of extended family and friends, these relationships become vital beacons during times of hardship and displacement.
Participation and Submissions
The competition was open to anyone residing, working, or studying in the City of Hume. Over 50 talented participants submitted incredible pieces that brought the theme to life. Eligible artworks included:
- Paintings
- Drawings
- Textiles and weaving
All works needed to be displayable on easels or tables, and submitted in A4 or A3 size.
Artwork Display
While the aim was to showcase as many entries as possible during the celebration, space limitations meant that some works were exhibited digitally via projector or TV screens. The winning pieces were featured prominently during the Refugee Week 2024 event, allowing the broader community to connect with the personal stories and artistic expressions behind each submission.
Competition Categories and Prizes
Submissions were judged in two categories:
Primary (Years 4 to 6)
- 1st Place: $150
- 2nd Place: $100
- 3rd Place: $50
Adult (Ages 13 and above)
- 1st Place: $200
- 2nd Place: $150
- 3rd Place: $100
This annual event not only celebrates artistic talent but also shines a spotlight on the resilience and humanity of the refugee experience. Thank you to everyone who participated, and congratulations to the winners for sharing their vision of freedom through family.
