Greek experts highlight human cost and global responsibility in the refugee crisis

At a recent panel titled “Navigating Displacement and Belonging: Comparative Perspectives on Refugee Integration in Greece and Australia,” experts shed light on the profound human toll of global displacement. Speakers pointed to crises in Afghanistan, Gaza, Ukraine, and beyond, stressing that refugees are too often reduced to statistics instead of being seen as individuals. They criticised harsh policies such as Australia’s offshore detention and deportation to Nauru, warning that such practices erode human rights and set troubling international precedents.

Greek scholars highlighted the pressures on frontline states like Greece, where geography, politics, and climate change converge to shape refugee journeys. They cautioned against framing refugees as security threats and urged governments to fulfill their legal and moral obligations, while fostering public understanding of refugee realities. The event concluded with a call for a more unified, empathetic, and realistic global response.
