Exhibition of Silent – Sydney

Exhibition of Silent Screams—a powerful human rights exhibition and memorial space dedicated to the victims of state-led oppression in Turkey.

Launched on the 5th of June, 2022 in New Jersey, the Exhibition of Silent Screams was created to preserve and share lived experiences that have long been silenced. Rather than relying on numbers or statistics, the exhibition gives voice to human suffering through deeply personal memory objects—belongings that were carried, saved, or left behind by individuals who endured political persecution, imprisonment, forced exile, and civil death.

Since its inception, the exhibition has been presented at more than 39 events across 20 cities in the United States and Canada, reaching thousands of visitors. It continues to grow as a living archive of memory, conscience, and justice.

At the heart of the exhibition are more than 450 memory objects. Each item bears witness to loss, resistance, and human dignity. These stories belong to individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Kurds, Alawis, participants of the Hizmet (Gülen) movement, journalists, teachers, women, children, activists, and others who have been marginalised and dehumanised under authoritarian rule.

📖 Among the stories you will encounter are:

  •

🧺 A blender carried across rivers and mountains to keep Baby Cevdet alive

📓 A prison notebook written by a mother as a legacy for her children

👞 The shoes of a teacher who crossed borders in search of safety and justice

The exhibition also commemorates lives tragically lost, including Taybet Ana, Hatice Akçabay and her three children, Ali İsmail Korkmaz, Garibe Gezer, and many others whose names and memories continue to call for truth and accountability.

The Exhibition of Silent Screams is not driven by religion, ethnicity, or ideology. It stands firmly on a universal commitment to human dignity, justice, and the fundamental right to be remembered.

🤍 Your presence would be a profound honour and a meaningful contribution to this collective act of remembrance. We sincerely hope you will join us to witness these stories, to reflect, and to stand in solidarity with the silenced.

Because silence, too, is a choice—and this exhibition dares to break it.
